Rugby Power: The New Currency of Success

The game of rugby has changed. It's faster, more dynamic, and more demanding than ever before. If you want to succeed in this new era, you can't rely on brute strength alone. You need power - the ability to generate force at speed, over and over again. This isn't just an advantage; it’s the new currency of success.
At CURVA, we’ve built our programs around this fundamental shift. We know that the modern game is defined by repeated explosive efforts. Our training is designed to build the kind of power that truly impacts your performance on the pitch.
The Shift from Strength to Power
Historically, rugby was a game of attrition. The focus was on being big and strong enough to win the battle in the scrum and the maul. Training reflected this, with an emphasis on maximum strength lifts and sustained, low-speed efforts.
Today, the game is a series of high-intensity sprints, powerful collisions, and quick changes of direction. This is due to a few key factors:
Rule Changes: Laws promoting a faster ball and a more open game have reduced the time for rest and recovery.
Professionalism: Athletes are now bigger, faster, and more conditioned. This has raised the physical standard for every position.
Sports Science: We now have the data to prove what we see on the pitch. GPS trackers show that the average player makes dozens of accelerations, decelerations, and short sprints per match.
These changes mean that a player who can lift a heavy weight slowly is less effective than one who can generate explosive power quickly. The ability to win a breakdown, burst through a tackle, or dominate a defensive ruck relies on your power output.
How We Build Explosive Power
At CURVA, our programs are engineered to build true rugby power. We use a combination of proven methods to ensure you're training effectively.
Olympic Lifts
Lifts like the power clean and snatch are at the core of our power-focused programs. They are excellent for developing total-body explosiveness, teaching your body to move heavy loads at high velocity. We provide full video guidance for every lift, ensuring you're performing them with perfect form to maximise your gains and prevent injury.
Plyometrics
We incorporate drills like box jumps, broad jumps, and medicine ball throws to train your body's ability to absorb and re-apply force quickly. These exercises are crucial for developing the explosive push-off needed for sprinting, jumping, and tackling.
Speed-Strength Protocols
We also use lighter weights on foundational lifts like squats and deadlifts, but with a focus on performing each repetition as explosively as possible. This trains your neuromuscular system to fire more rapidly, translating to faster, more powerful movements on the pitch.
Our app personalises your plan to your position and goals. If you're an explosive winger, your program will have a different focus than that of a high-work-rate flanker. We provide the tools to train smarter, so you can perform at your peak when it matters most. It’s time to invest in the new currency of success.
